We welcome the opportunity to work with other student organizations including: religious groups, Greek organizations, and civic clubs. The Duke-Carolina Student Basketball Marathon is a wonderful way to collaborate with other student groups both at Duke and Carolina to better our community. Some of the ways student organizations can partner with the Student Basketball Marathon are listed below.

Be a Player and form your own team:
Each team can consist of 6-8 players, each of whom will be responsible for raising as much money as they can for the kids (we have set the minimum at $100 per player). Each team will get to play 1-2 hours, depending on the number of teams interested. We strongly encourage applicants to commit to staying in the gym for the Full Marathon (26 hours), but you can also opt for the Half

Marathon (13 hours), the Quarter Marathon (6 hours), or simply play Pickup (1 hour). We want teams to stay as long as they can to show support for the kids. Priority in playing time (we are expecting more applicants than we have time for) will go to those who (1) commit to stay the longest (2) turn in the forms first and (3) recruit sister/brother teams from the school down the road for intense match-ups. You can also sign up as an individual and we’ll make a team for you. Registration forms are due by November 30th. If you have any questions, send them our way. [Click here for Players Page]

Fundraising Events:
Student organizations have had tremendous success organizing fundraising events in the past that were fun for the participants and student organizers alike. Organizations might even consider sponsoring a specific player or coach. Fundraising ideas include:

  • Date auctions
  • Charity bar/club nights
  • 5K runs
  • Raffle tickets
  • Car washes
  • Candy sales
  • Talent/music shows
  • Gourmet dinners

Letter Campaigns:
Letter campaigns have often proved to be one of the most successful forms of fundraising. If you provide us with a list of friends and family of members of your organization (with permission of course), we will write and send out letters soliciting donations on behalf of your organization.

Canning:
Canning is one of the simplest ways to make money. Sign up your organization and we will assign you to a pre-approved, popular, public spot in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-Durham community to can. Each canning drive requires a commitment of 2 hours of accepting (not soliciting) donations and 4-8 students from your organization to participate.

Volunteer During the Student Basketball Marathon Weekend:
Student organizations can volunteer to help during the actual Student Basketball Marathon Weekend. We need help setting and cleaning up, providing event security, working the log book, stats, and scoreboard, videotaping the marathon, providing transportation for food pick-ups and deliveries, and so forth. Student organizations are also encouraged to invite members to attend our festivities during the Marathon weekend! [Sign up online.]

Provide Meals During the Student Basketball Marathon Weekend:
We are encouraging student organizations to provide snacks or meals for the players, referees, and coaches who will be on the court for the entire Marathon.  This could entail something as simple as baking brownies or committing to providing meals.
